What is wrong
When the same word or phrase appears multiple times in your page title, search engines see redundancy rather than useful information. Google's guidance on title links emphasises that titles work best when they describe your page clearly and concisely. Repeating words—such as "Shoes | Buy Shoes | Shoes Online"—wastes the limited space available in search results to tell visitors what your page actually offers.
Why it costs you
Search engines may shorten or rewrite titles that repeat themselves, so your page might appear in results with a title you did not write. Visitors who see a vague or repetitive title are less likely to click through. You also lose the chance to include different keywords that might match what someone is searching for.
How to fix it
Check your page titles across the site and remove repeated terms. If a word appears more than once in your title, keep just the most important instance and replace the others with words that add real information—such as location, product type, price, or benefit. Make this change in the `<title>` tag in the HTML `<head>` section of each page. If you use a template for multiple pages, fix the template once rather than editing each page individually.
What the audit tests
- No word of four or more characters appears more than twice in the title
