What is wrong
Your page title and meta description—the text that appears in Google search results—either say nothing useful or repeat generic words like "home" or "welcome". Search engines and visitors rely on these snippets to understand what your page is about, and generic text fails to tell them anything.
Why it costs you
When your title and description are vague, visitors cannot tell whether your page answers their question before they click. They skip your result and choose a competitor's instead. Search engines also struggle to understand what your page is for, making it harder to show it for relevant searches.
How to fix it
Write a title that describes what the page actually does or contains—for instance, "Shoe Repairs in Manchester" instead of "Welcome". Write a meta description that summarises the page's purpose or main offer in 25 words or fewer, in plain language. Edit these in your page template if you manage many pages with the same template, rather than one page at a time.
What the audit tests
- The title says more than just the site's own domain name
- The meta description does not trail off with an ellipsis (...)
