What is wrong
Links without anchor text are hyperlinks on your pages that have no visible words or label for visitors to click on. This happens when a link is empty—it might contain only whitespace, an icon without a text description, or nothing at all. Google cannot tell what the link is meant to lead to because there is no text to read.
Why it costs you
When links have no anchor text, Google struggles to understand what pages they point to and why they matter. This means pages reachable only through empty links may be overlooked by Google's crawler, take longer to discover, or be ranked for the wrong topics. Visitors also cannot tell where a link goes before clicking it, which frustrates user experience and often leads them to leave your site.
How to fix it
To fix this, add descriptive text to every link. The text should briefly explain where the link goes or what it does—for example, change `<a href="/about">` to `<a href="/about">About us</a>`. If a link contains only an image, add an alt attribute with a meaningful description: `<a href="/about"><img src="logo.png" alt="About us"></a>`. Make this correction in your page template if the empty links appear on multiple pages; one template edit will fix them everywhere.
