What is wrong
Some of your pages are published in only one format. This typically means a page exists as HTML on the web but not as an AMP version, PDF, or other alternative format that search engines can index. Search engines see this as a missed opportunity because the same content could reach visitors through different routes and devices.
Why it costs you
When content exists in only one format, you lose visibility in search results that favour alternative formats, and you cannot serve the best version to every visitor. A mobile user on a slow connection might benefit from a lightweight AMP page. A researcher might prefer to download and keep a PDF. Without these options, some people will not find your page, or they will leave because the version available does not suit their needs.
How to fix it
To add format options, identify your longest pages—those over 1500 words are good candidates—and decide which alternative format makes sense for each. You might generate an AMP version automatically through your CMS, create a PDF export option, or publish key pages in multiple formats using the `rel="alternate"` tag in the HTML head to tell search engines the versions are related. If you use a content management system, check whether it has a built-in feature to publish in multiple formats; this is often simpler than coding it yourself.
What the audit tests
- A long page (1,500+ words) embeds a frame, such as a video player
- A long page (1,500+ words) carries video, audio or podcast markup
