What is wrong

When you have product variants—such as different colours or sizes of the same item—each variant can have its own URL. The issue is that these separate variant URLs are being linked to from other pages on your site as if they were independent products, rather than treating them as variations of a single product.

Why it costs you

Search engines see each URL as a separate page. When variant URLs are heavily linked internally, it divides the authority and relevance signals across multiple versions of essentially the same product. This means no single variant page accumulates enough strength to rank well, and you waste crawl budget making search engines index near-duplicate content instead of discovering new, genuinely different pages on your site.

How to fix it

The fix depends on your setup. If your ecommerce platform (like Shopify) allows it, configure variant selection to work through query parameters or selector menus on a single product page, so visitors and search engines see one URL regardless of which variant they choose. If you must keep separate variant URLs for technical reasons, use the canonical tag on each variant page to point to the main product page, telling search engines which version matters most. Check your product linking templates to ensure you are not building internal links to specific variant URLs; link to the base product page instead.
