What is wrong

Google measures how fast and responsive your website feels to visitors using three metrics called Core Web Vitals. Your site's scores are outside the ranges Google considers good, which means the experience of using your site falls below what search engines now expect.

Why it costs you

When your Core Web Vitals are poor, Google's search algorithm ranks you lower than competitors with better scores. Your pages become harder to find in search results even when they're otherwise relevant. Additionally, visitors leave slow or unresponsive sites at higher rates, which reduces the number of people who actually reach your content.

How to fix it

Start by running your pages through Google PageSpeed Insights, which shows you which of the three metrics is weakest and suggests specific fixes—usually image optimisation, removing render-blocking code, or reducing server response time. Prioritise the metric furthest from Google's good thresholds first. If your site runs on WordPress or Shopify, many Core Web Vitals improvements come from your hosting provider or theme settings rather than code changes. This matters because Google is actively using Core Web Vitals in ranking decisions through 2026.

What the audit tests

  • Main content loads quickly for real visitors (LCP rated good by Google)
  • The page responds quickly to taps and clicks (INP rated good by Google)
  • The layout stays steady while loading (CLS rated good by Google)
